Imagine your garden is as beautiful and accommodating as the one in Father of The Bride and you'll soon be wanting a backyard wedding all of your own (minus the bad poufy sleeves). We're loving the idea of a traditional but simple affair with a modern take on a 50's garden wedding- where jordan almonds and baby's breath are not only welcome, but expected. These old fashioned elements are popping up all over the place these days in ways that are anything but passé. Chalkboard Typography

Recently design student Natalie Krick used Rose Bredl as a backdrop for her hand-drawn typography, and we love the results! Natalie used ice creams from local shop Jeni's (delicious) and created a mock wedding dessert menu (such a good idea). You can see more of her amazing chalkboard typography here.

just like everyone's favorite Travis song...right? But aren't these pretty? You can easily do this yourself for a party (a shower, perhaps?) or just because its nice to be greeted with flowers on any occasion.
to accomplish:
1. Take an standard size piece of kraft paper and fold into a cone
2. fill a plastic bag with water and secure with a rubber band around the stem of your chosen flower (or use floral tubes from any floral supplies carrier)
3. gently snestle flowers down inside paper cone- use a rock for weight if needed.
4. tie with pretty ribbon or twine and voila!

Signs of Valentines are popping up around the shop- we are stocked with pretty pottery and peony pink goodness for the girl you love. This table makes me so happy- I especially love the idea of using that DBO tray in my own bathroom to display pretty toiletries.

Whitney is one of our brides at Rose Bredl, and her upcoming June wedding is going to be an elegant terrace affair with charcoal grey and coral accents. The bride, who loves bold patterns (especially chevron) found much of her inspiration from this wedding featured on style me pretty, so I sprinkled images from this throughout. She is working with Finer Things Event Planning to nail down the details of her big day, and we thought we'd help by creating an inspiration board tailored just for her.

The weather is SO GROSS. I'm looking forward to curling up with the one I love and a cup of hot cocoa when I come home from work.
I love these valentinesy hot cocoa ideas, too. Use a cookie cutter to cut heart shapes out of marshmallows, or, out of cool whip thats been spread on a cookie sheet chilled freezer. ( I really want to try this one, since my mom always put cool whip in our hot chocolate as a kid)

I loved the palette from this bouquet Mary made for an event yesterday- the pretty greens and pinks just popped paired with the softer neutrals throughout. I always love when brides venture away from the two-color wedding theme. It makes everything more interesting (not to mention easier for planning- since everything you plan on having at your event has to be only two colors- and exactly the same hue as the two colors you chose.) Draw inspiration from a favorite photo, you'll find there are hundreds of colors working together to make one big happy scheme- then pick your favorites!

DIY RB ornaments

These ornaments are super easy to make and so cute hanging from fresh greenery anywhere in the home

to make you need:
fillable glass ornaments (available at your local craft store)
fake snow
wee little bits o' nature: we used tiny baby pinecones and leftover greenery, but dried berries, branches, acorns etc etc. will do, too.

Bulbs have arrived at Rose Bredl! Beautifully planted amaryllis and paperwhite bulbs make great hostess gifts for the holidays. Their fragrance and color are such a treat this time of year, and they require very little fussing once they're planted.

PS- Here's a tip we learned from a friend Nick: If you don't want your paperwhite to grow too tall and topple over, change the plants regular water to a 5% alcohol solution once the plants is about 2" high. You'll get a shorter plant but the flowers will be just as large (and just as delightful smelling!)

Oh Delicious: Autumn Pairing

I stumbled on both of these recipes in the past week and thought they would make the perfect fare for an autumn party- a cocktail featuring not only apple brandy but maple syrup, and my friend Amy's bourbon spice pumpkin whoopie pies. *prepare yourself*

The Sidewalker
Adapted from Damon Boelte, Prime Meats
Makes 1 cocktail

1 ounce apple brandy (such as Laird's)
¾ ounce lemon juice
½ ounce maple syrup
¼ ounce apple cider vinegar
Cold wheat beer (such as Hefeweizen or Weihenstephaner hefeweissbier)
Lemon wedge, to garnish

Pour the brandy, lemon juice, maple syrup and vinegar into a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake. Strain the cocktail into a chilled, tall glass and top with beer. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

We are SO ready for fall at Rose Bredl. New DBO home just arrived: gorgeous handmade pottery with patterns that come directly from nature. The artist literally presses in queen anne's lace, honeycomb, fallen leaves etc. to leave a ghostly etching in the clay.

Recently Mary and her husband Patrick took a trip to NYC. I love these photos of the High Line sky park taken by Patrick, and thought they would be fun to share with you! Garden Roses... especially some Augusta Louise (the pink one with the antique looking yellow tinges on its edges) perfect for September bride. We love that Katie used several garden rose varieties accented with ranunculus for her wedding this past weekend (and she was a gorgeous bride, to boot)

These illustrations by Penelope Dullaghan remind of the coming autumn. They have such a lovely quirkiness to them, and I love a good mary jane, don't you?

Also, we were so thrilled when Elizabeth featured the store yesterday over on Love is the Adventure! (it was a goody goody gumdrop kind of thrilled.) We were so thrilled to be even the smallest part of one of the greatest cancer fighting communities out there- Pelotonia. Cancer has touched so many of us here at Rose Bredl on a personal level, and we will do everything to support an organization which has one goal: to beat cancer. It is never too late/to early to give (every single dollar goes to funding cancer research)Please, please check them out and consider being a part of next year's race.

PS- we thought the video Outsider Entertainment made for Pelotonia's opening night was over-the-top amazing; emotional, heart-felt, and downright inspiring. (look for Mary at the very end)

We had such an amazing time celebrating the pending arrival of my nephew (due any day here!) Rose Bredl was the perfect setting; its already gorgeous and we had everything we needed on hand to throw a great party. I may never throw another shower/sprinkle anywhere else...

The sweet tooth is taking over! I wanted cherry pie for lunch today. Having opted for something savory though (Commonwealth Sandwich Bar), the need for a little sugar kept nagging. Thank goodness for Pistacia Vera, a short drive from Rose Bredl. I absolutely love the pistachio nougat... and macarons... and iced coffee. Don't worry, this wasn't all for me (and I still might get that cherry pie).

Summer DIY- Glittered Hurricanes + Votives

Perfect for an outdoor summer party or wedding- these glittered hurricanes were super easy to make and the effect is magical (summer magical, you might say.)

Be warned though, once you start putting glitter on things, it's hard to stop.

All you need-

*glitter (Martha Stewart's glitter is amazing)

If you must wear something other than a bathing suit and sunscreen- might as well be as cute as you can be in an adorable sundress (every woman looks better in a sundress, according to Atmosphere). Cool off with delicious fruity popsicles. I go for Fruitique, made in Columbus (they carry them at Whole Foods, in case you are wondering) or make my own in my Zoku.

Vintage Matchbook

I've always loved the different ways people display their collections (and the crazy things people collect!) We've found endless inspiration from the pages of Kate Spade's old day planner (picture above left) but this is one of my favorites- a framed board of vintage matchbooks. As it so happens, Mary has THOUSANDS of vintage matchbooks, and here are a few of them up in the shop, all Kate Spaded out. I like the "hogs and kisses" matchbook best of all.

Homemade ButterBeer!

Sorry for a late post today, it was a busy (and HOT) day here in Ohio. I thought I would share the butterbeer recipe we came up with this weekend on our own- the great thing is our recipe is entirely gluten-free!

There are no measurements, just do everything to your taste.

Blend:

slow churned vanilla ice cream

milk

butterscotch topping (we used Smuckers)

McCormick imitation vanilla butter and nut flavor

Then Add:

cream soda (we used Virgil's)

a splash of Spiced Rum (unless of course, you are making this for children)

top with whip cream and enjoy!
